About

Henri Antoine Grouès, known as Abbé Pierre, was a Catholic priest and a prominent French public figure recognized for his fight against poverty. Ordained in 1938, he served as a chaplain and joined the Resistance during World War II, an action that earned him the Croix de Guerre. In the postwar period he served as a deputy for Meurthe‑et‑Moselle and took part in federalist and pacifist movements, collaborating with intellectuals such as Albert Camus.

In 1949 he founded the Emmaus Movement, an organization devoted to sheltering people experiencing social exclusion and to the charitable reuse of goods, which expanded internationally over the following decades. He became particularly famous for a radio appeal in February 1954 that mobilized mass donations for victims of a severe winter and cemented his public image as an advocate for the poor.

Throughout his life he maintained a public role that combined religious commitment, social activism and political engagement. His legacy endures chiefly through the Emmaus Movement and the solidarity initiatives he promoted in France and abroad.
