About

Otto Adolf Eichmann was an officer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) in Nazi Germany, known for his central role in the logistical organization of the Holocaust. As head of the “Jewish Affairs” section in the Sicherheitsdienst, he was tasked with coordinating the mass deportation of Jews from ghettos to extermination camps, designing and implementing the transport schemes that made large-scale genocide possible.

Closely associated with the Wannsee Conference, Eichmann gathered information, prepared drafts and carried out the administrative decisions that turned Nazi policy of expulsion into a policy of extermination. In 1944 he oversaw mass deportations, including those from Hungary, whose transports to Auschwitz resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

After the war he fled to Argentina, where he lived under a false identity until located and captured by an Israeli Mossad team in 1960. Tried in Israel for war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes against the Jewish people, he was convicted and executed in 1962. His trial sparked wide public and intellectual debate, notably inspiring the work that coined the phrase “the banality of evil.”
