About

Adriaan Roland Holst was a Dutch poet and writer known for a solemn, symbolic style that left a mark on Dutch-language literature. Widely called the “Prince of Dutch Poets,” he established a large body of work centered on mythological themes, elevated solitude and romantic imagery, with poems that favored lyrical intensity and a strong symbolic imagination.

His output includes notable volumes such as Verzen (his debut) and the poetic narrative Deirdre en de zonen van Usnach, which explores a Celtic world and continues to be read. Over the course of his career he published collections that deepen mythic and meditative motifs, such as Ex tenebris mundi and Het Elysisch verlangen, as well as works on literary figures of his generation.

Part of an influential literary circle, he maintained relationships with contemporary authors and poets and received critical recognition, including the Constantijn Huygens Prize among his most significant awards. Roland Holst’s legacy remains linked to the renewal of twentieth-century Dutch poetry through his vivid imagery and the coherence of a singular poetic voice.
