Adrienne Cecile Rich was an American poet, essayist, and teacher whose work wove together personal experience and political commitment. She became a central voice of contemporary feminism by challenging fixed gender identities and proposing the concept of the “lesbian continuum,” an idea about solidarity and creativity among women that influenced debates on sexuality and the women’s movement.
Her output includes volumes of poetry and essays addressing motherhood, politics, art, and social oppression, among them well-known titles such as Diving into the Wreck, Of Woman Born, and The Dream of a Common Language. Rich also wrote about her Jewish heritage and did not shy away from forceful stances on civil rights and inequality.
