About

António Agostinho da Silva Neto was an Angolan physician, writer, and political leader who played a central role in Angola’s independence movement in the 20th century. Trained in medicine in Portugal, he first became known for his intellectual activity among African students and for poetic publications that circulated as a subversive critique of colonial rule. His political engagement led to repeated arrests by the Portuguese political police (PIDE) and to exile, experiences that shaped both his activism and his literary work.

As leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) from 1960, Neto coordinated the organization that carried out the struggle for independence and, upon the proclamation of independence in 1975, became Angola’s first president, a position he held until 1979. During this period he received international recognitions, including the Lenin Peace Prize (1975–1976).

Beyond his political activity, Neto left a cultural legacy as an important poet in Angolan and Portuguese‑language African literature. His career—across medicine, political imprisonment, literary production, and party leadership—made him a national reference; his birth is celebrated in Angola as National Hero Day.
