About

Al Franken is a comedian, writer, author and former U.S. senator known for moving from an entertainment career into politics. He rose to national prominence as a writer and performer on the sketch program Saturday Night Live, creating memorable characters such as Stuart Smalley and earning Emmy Awards for his television work. He also appeared in films and collaborated with long-time partners on pieces of political satire.

As an author, he published political-criticism and humor bestsellers, including satirical works targeting conservative figures and media, which brought him editorial recognition and awards, including Grammys for audio editions. His writing and performances helped shape political satire in the 1990s and 2000s.

Eligible and elected to the U.S. Senate from Minnesota in 2008, Franken served as a Democratic senator until his resignation in 2018. The narrow margin of his 2008 victory and his 2014 reelection characterized his short legislative career, which became surrounded by controversies beginning in 2017–2018. After leaving office, he returned to work in radio and political commentary.
