About

Al Jarreau was an American singer renowned for his vocal versatility and ability to move between jazz, pop, and R&B. Trained in psychology with a master’s degree, he began singing in church choirs and local groups before gaining attention in the jazz clubs of San Francisco and Los Angeles, often accompanied by musicians such as George Duke. Being signed to a record label in the 1970s launched his international career.

His albums earned both critical and commercial recognition: We Got By and Glow paved the way, and Breakin' Away (1981), which included the hit “We’re in This Love Together,” cemented his success and brought him multiple Grammy Awards. Over the course of his career he won seven Grammys, including awards across jazz, pop, and R&B categories—a unique achievement among winners.

Beyond his records, Jarreau took part in diverse projects, collaborations, and large festival performances such as Rock in Rio, and he also headlined a season on Broadway. His career left a legacy of vocal innovation and influence on jazz and contemporary popular singers.
