About

Al Unser was an American racing driver and a member of the celebrated Unser family, known for its long tradition at the Indianapolis 500. He became notable for winning the Indianapolis 500 four times (1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987), a feat matched by only a few others in the race’s history, and for securing three national championship titles (1970, 1983 and 1985).

His professional career included stints with prominent teams such as Vel’s Parnelli Jones, Jim Hall and Team Penske; in 1970, with VPJ, he dominated the season with ten wins and strong performances on ovals, road courses and dirt tracks. Known for his consistency and skill in pit stops, he also found success in parallel series such as IROC, where he was champion in 1977–1978.

Al was a central figure in a lineage of competitors: brother of Jerry and Bobby Unser and father of Al Unser Jr., the family combining for nine Indianapolis 500 victories. Off the track, he helped preserve the family’s memory through the Unser Racing Museum in Albuquerque, a museum devoted to the Unser legacy in racing.
