About

Albert Kesselring was a German military commander whose career spanned from World War I to World War II. A professional officer trained during the imperial period, he served prominently on the General Staff and in the reorganization of German forces between the wars, taking an active part in the creation and expansion of the Luftwaffe in the 1930s. As an air commander, he led Luftwaffe formations in the campaigns in Poland, the Netherlands, France and on the Eastern Front, receiving promotions up to the rank of field marshal.

In Italy (1943–1944) he became the name most associated with the German defense, coordinating a prolonged and organized resistance, notably on the Gustav Line, which delayed the Allied advance. Late in the war he expanded his command over fronts in southern Europe with the aim of facilitating surrenders to the Western forces.

After the capitulation, Kesselring was tried by the British for war crimes and originally sentenced to death, a penalty later commuted to life imprisonment; released in 1952 on health grounds, he spent his final years writing his memoirs. Later historiography reassessed his role, recognizing him among the military commanders of the Third Reich, although his legacy remains marked by his part in Nazi operations.
