About

Albert François Lebrun was a mining engineer and a prominent French political figure associated with the Democratic Republican Alliance. Trained at the École Polytechnique and the École des Mines de Paris, where he graduated top of his class, he began a technical career before entering politics in the early twentieth century. He held major ministerial posts, including Minister of the Colonies (1912–1914), Minister of War (1913) and Minister of the Liberated Regions (1917–1919).

Elected to the Senate in 1920 and later president of the Senate, Lebrun became President of the Republic in 1932 following the assassination of Paul Doumer and was re‑elected in 1939. His presidency was characterized by a constitutional restraint on executive power, but it ended with the military collapse of 1940: facing the crisis, he appointed Philippe Pétain as prime minister and promulgated the law authorizing the constitutional revision of July 1940, an act that ended the Third Republic.

Detained by the Germans in 1943 and subsequently released for health reasons, Lebrun returned to private life after the Liberation and maintained an ambiguous stance regarding his responsibility for the 1940 crisis. Married to Marguerite Lebrun, he died in 1950; his legacy remains tied to the end of the Third Republic and the critical decisions made during the 1940 collapse.
