About

Albert Préjean (born Albert Hamond) was a French actor whose career spanned the transition from silent to sound cinema, becoming a recurring figure in European film during the 1920s and 1930s. Partly educated outside France and a First World War veteran who served as an aviator with the Escadrille des Cigognes, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Légion d’honneur. He began as a stuntman and quickly moved into leading roles, debuting in 1923 as the protagonist of René Clair’s film Paris qui dort, with whom he maintained a close collaboration on important works of the period.

Préjean also made a name for himself as a singer with the advent of talking pictures, appearing in musicals and short song films and bringing to the stage a repertoire of impressions and popular numbers. His filmography includes works by filmmakers such as René Clair, Raymond Bernard, Jacques Feyder and G. W. Pabst, covering genres from historical drama to the avant-garde cinema of the time.

During the German occupation of France in the Second World War, his decision to continue making films drew criticism — an episode that marks part of his public biography. He left a family artistic tradition: his son Patrick Préjean became a prominent voice actor and stage performer, and his memoirs were published in 1979, the year of his death.
