About

French poet associated with Symbolism, Albert Samain was known for his formal precision and the melancholy tone of his work. Originally from Lille, he moved to Paris at the end of the 19th century, joined influential literary circles, and included among his peers editors and writers linked to Mercure de France, a magazine to which he contributed and whose founding he helped shape.

His public recognition came with the volume Au jardin de l’infante (1893), praised by contemporary critics and frequently reissued. The mix of metrical rigor — including formal experiments such as the fifteen‑line sonnet — and elegiac sensibility made his verses a touchstone for readers and composers.

Samain also worked in lyric theatre: the drama Polyphème, written in his final years, is often cited as one of his greatest achievements and provided the basis for later musical settings. After his premature death at 42, his poems continued to be reprinted and inspired musicians and visual artists, securing him a lasting place in the French poetic tradition.
