About

Alejandro Sawa was a Spanish novelist, poet and journalist associated with the literary bohemia of the late 19th century. Of Greek origin and informally educated in Seville, Málaga and Granada, he arrived in Madrid in 1885 and became a marginal yet emblematic figure in the city’s intellectual life, admired for his intense personality and a style influenced by Victor Hugo and the French symbolists.

He spent a period in Paris, where he worked on the editorial staff of an encyclopedic dictionary, translated the Goncourt brothers and forged ties with Parnassian and Symbolist writers; he married Jeanne Poirier and had a daughter. Back in Madrid, he devoted himself to journalism as an editor and contributor to major periodicals, maintaining a steady presence in the press despite economic hardship.

His personal story—marked by poverty, blindness and mental illness in his final years—inspired characters and writers of the Generation of ’98, such as Valle‑Inclán and Pío Baroja. After his death he received critical recognition: the posthumous publication Iluminaciones en la sombra and praise from contemporaries helped secure his role as a bridge between Spanish naturalism and modernism.
