About

Alessandro Manzoni was an Italian writer whose work decisively shaped national literature and language. A novelist, poet and playwright, he won international recognition with I promessi sposi (The Betrothed), a novel published between 1825 and 1827 that became the model of the modern Italian novel and a touchstone for the consolidation of literary Italian. In it, Manzoni balances deep psychological characterization of his characters, a strong Christian matrix and social criticism, setting moral destinies that resonated beyond his time.

Over his life he moved from Neoclassicism to Romanticism and converted to an austere Catholicism that influenced his intellectual output, including the Inni sacri and his reflections on morality. His dramatic work — among them Il Conte di Carmagnola and Adelchi — provoked aesthetic and political controversies, reflecting the tensions of nineteenth‑century Italy.

Also prominent in public life, he received awards and was appointed a senator of the Kingdom of Italy. His personal life, marked by family losses and health problems, contrasts with the lasting impact of his work, which remains central to the Italian literary tradition.
