Alfred Balk

About

Alfred Balk was an American reporter, non-fiction author, and magazine editor whose investigative work influenced social issues and journalistic practice. He became known for pioneering reports on housing segregation — including a series that exposed real-estate predatory practices against Black families — and also covered the Nation of Islam, environmental issues, and Illinois politics. His refusal to reveal a confidential source led to a landmark legal case that helped establish reporter’s privilege.

He also worked as an editor and opinion shaper in the press: he was editor of the Columbia Journalism Review, founding editor of the World Press Review, and held positions in organizations such as the Society of Magazine Writers and the American Society of Magazine Editors. He taught journalism at Columbia and at the S.I. Newhouse School and produced audiovisual projects about the profession’s challenges.

Author of more than a hundred articles and seven books, he wrote on topics ranging from the history of radio to the tax-exempt status of religious institutions. His work influenced ethical reforms in Illinois politics and contributed to debates about media responsibility, leaving a legacy as an investigative journalist and educator of the profession.
