Alfred Max Vogel was a Swiss herbalist, naturopath and writer whose career influenced the development of industrialized herbal medicine in the 20th century. Owner of health shops and a spa in Trogen, Vogel expanded his activities by founding clinics and retail outlets in several Swiss towns and, in 1963, establishing the company Bioforce AG to produce plant extracts at scale.
His published work included magazines and several books on nutrition and natural health, through which he promoted practices of “natural living” and the use of fresh plants. Among his best‑known products is a formulation based on Echinacea purpurea, marketed commercially as Echinaforce, which helped popularize that plant in complementary medicine.
Vogel traveled extensively and took an interest in Indigenous traditions, a theme that influenced his research. Over his life he received public recognition, created a foundation and had a museum dedicated to him in Teufen. However, parts of his biography generated controversy: honorary titles and claims about medical practices were questioned, so this text flags the need to review ambiguous points.
