About
Almir Sater is a Brazilian ten-string viola player, singer, songwriter and actor, noted for revitalizing and refining the ten‑string viola. Hailing from Mato Grosso do Sul, he built a career defined by experimentation that blends caipira sounds, border influences (Paraguayan and Andean) and elements of blues, folk and rock. With more than three decades of work and ten solo albums, he has become a leading figure in preserving the repertory and techniques of the viola.
In the 1990s he rose to national prominence through roles in soap operas, where his characters and songs — such as “Um Violeiro Toca” — widened his public recognition. As a composer he has won major awards, including Sharps for instrumental performances and coauthorships, and was listed among the 30 greatest Brazilian icons of guitar and acoustic guitar by Rolling Stone Brasil.
His partnership with Renato Teixeira produced acclaimed albums (AR and +AR), awards such as the Latin Grammy and critical recognition, as well as nominations. He has also worked on cultural documentation projects for the Pantanal and received an honorary degree (Honoris Causa) from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, underscoring his musical and cultural legacy.
