About

Amy Lowell was an American poet known for her role in the Imagist movement and for promoting American poetry abroad. Born into an influential family—sister of the astronomer Percival Lowell and of Abbott Lawrence Lowell, president of Harvard—she distinguished herself both through her poetry and her work as an editor and literary promoter.

A contributor to the first Imagist anthology and active on the poetic scene after moving to London in 1915, Lowell took a leading role in spreading Imagism internationally, although her approach was sometimes criticized for favoring static images compared with other Imagists. She published numerous collections during her lifetime, including A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass, Sword Blades and Poppy Seed, and Can Grande’s Castle.

Her legacy includes establishing an annual fellowship, the Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship, aimed at promoting the circulation of American poetry outside the United States. She was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1926 for the collection What’s O’Clock.
