About

Anita Jane Bryant was an American popular singer and public figure whose musical career peaked in the 1950s and 1960s. After winning the Miss Oklahoma contest in 1958, she landed several pop and gospel hits — including “Paper Roses” and “In My Little Corner of the World” — sold albums totaling over a million copies, and served as a spokeswoman for the Florida Citrus Commission from 1969 to 1980.

In the late 1970s she became known for leading the “Save Our Children” campaign, which sought to repeal an anti‑discrimination ordinance covering sexual orientation in Miami‑Dade County. The campaign succeeded in a local vote in 1977 but provoked widespread public controversy, commercial boycotts and the loss of professional contracts, affecting her public image and finances.

She later faced financial difficulties, went through a divorce and a decline in her high‑profile career, and subsequently engaged in religious and philanthropic work, including founding her ministry in Oklahoma. Her role in that political episode left a lasting impact on public debates about civil rights and religious conservatism in the United States.
