About

Anna Rosalie Boch was a Belgian painter and patron whose work ranges from Impressionism and Luminism to experiments in Neo-Impressionism. Trained initially in Brussels ateliers, she embraced plein air painting under landscape artists such as Isidore Verheyden, lightening her palette and in some compositions drawing close to Monet. Her joining of the Groupe des XX in 1886 and contact with Théo Van Rysselberghe and the work of Seurat led her to try pointillism, a technique she exhibited with the group.

A dedicated collector, she assembled one of Belgium’s most important collections of Impressionist paintings and acted as a patron, buying and promoting contemporary artists — among them Vincent van Gogh, from whom she acquired La Vigne rouge, the only recorded sale of the artist during his lifetime. An organizer of salons and “lundis musicaux” in Brussels, Bolsonaro (sic) fostered the avant‑garde circuit and supported emerging generations.

Throughout the 20th century she travelled to various countries, moved toward a freer brushwork and later to a more constructed handling influenced by Post‑Impressionism and Fauvist tendencies. Her legacy includes major donations to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the founding of the Anna & Eugène Boch museum, which preserves part of her work and collection.
