About

Anne Bancroft (born Anna Maria Louisa Italiano) was an American actress prominent in theater, film, and television, whose career spanned five decades. Trained in acting from childhood, she established herself on Broadway—where she won a Tony for Two for the Seesaw—before gaining international recognition for dramatic, complex roles.

Her dramatic work earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Miracle Worker, portraying the teacher Annie Sullivan, along with several subsequent nominations. In the 1960s she reached wide popularity with The Graduate, playing the iconic Mrs. Robinson, a role that anchored her cultural image and broadened her renown with both audiences and critics.

Throughout her career she was noted for her versatility: from period dramas to comedies and television roles, she worked with directors such as Arthur Penn, Mike Nichols, David Lynch, and Sidney Lumet. Beyond awards, she left a legacy as a respected performer on stage and screen, maintaining artistic relevance through her final theater and television work.

Her personal life included marriage to Mel Brooks and the parenthood of one son; she died in 2005, leaving an extensive body of work and a lasting influence on the performing arts.
