About

Anne de Vries was a Dutch teacher and writer, known for works for children and for regional novels set in Drenthe. Raised in the Christian tradition, he devoted much of his career to educational literature, producing schoolbooks, children’s Bibles and classroom tales that circulated widely in denominational schools. His output includes popular series and memorable characters such as Bartje Bartels, who became a symbol of stubbornness and the rural character of the province of Drenthe.

The novel Bartje (and its sequel) brought him wide recognition and was adapted for television, extending the reach of his work and cementing the region’s image in Dutch culture. During World War II he took part in the resistance; those experiences influenced later works such as Reis door de nacht, which examines the effects of the conflict on a Reformed family.

De Vries also worked on biographies and memoiristic writing, gathering material on resistance figures—most notably the book dedicated to Johannes Post—and thereby building a literary legacy focused on moral education and historical memory. His work left a mark on Dutch children’s literature and the regional memory of the Netherlands.
