Anne of York

About

Anne of York, also known as Anne Plantagenet, was a member of the English high nobility in the 15th century and the elder sister of Kings Edward IV and Richard III. The daughter of Richard, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, she belonged to the family dynamics that shaped the Wars of the Roses and the struggle for the English throne.

She was married in childhood to Henry Holland, 3rd Duke of Exeter; that marriage ended in separation and divorce. During the conflict between the houses of York and Lancaster, her husband sided with the Lancastrians, placing Anne in a difficult position; despite this, she remained politically loyal to her brother Edward and intervened to dissuade other family members from supporting the Lancastrians, helping to restore Yorkist rule.

Around 1474 she married Thomas St. Leger, with whom she had a daughter, Anne St. Leger, who brought her mother's estates into the Manners family and became an ancestor of the Earl of Rutland in the reign of Henry VIII. Anne died in 1476 in childbirth and was buried in the chapel now associated with the Rutland family at Windsor Castle.
