Anne Sexton

About

Anne Sexton was an American poet associated with the confessional poetry movement, known for turning intimate experiences and personal suffering into poetic material. Over her career she published in prestigious journals and formed close ties with central figures of contemporary poetry, such as Robert Lowell, W. D. Snodgrass, Sylvia Plath and Maxine Kumin — with the latter she maintained a friendship and editorial collaboration.

Her work addressed frankly subjects then rarely discussed in poetry: depression, suicidal ideation and attempts, female sexuality, menstruation, abortion and family conflicts. This direct, autobiographical tone won her critical recognition and popular attention, culminating in the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1967.

Her literary life was also marked by a long struggle with mental illness, psychiatric episodes and therapy that influenced both the content and the pace of her output. Posthumous publications collected poems, letters and essays that helped consolidate her legacy.

Today Anne Sexton remains a controversial and influential figure: her pioneering voice in bringing the private into the poetic opened the way for discussions of mental health and the female experience in American literature.
