About

Antoine Bourdelle was a French sculptor and teacher whose work helped shift sculpture from the Beaux-Arts academicism toward modernism and anticipated early signs of the Art Déco movement. A student of Alexandre Falguière and a collaborator for fifteen years in Auguste Rodin’s studio, Bourdelle developed his own vigorous, monumental language that moved away from Rodin’s modeled manner and influenced successive generations of artists.

Known for public monuments, busts and heroic compositions, he was notable for works such as Hercules the Archer and the decoration of the Théâtre des Champs‑Élysées (1913), an emblematic project that foreshadowed the Art Déco style. He received international commissions, exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show in New York, and received successive honors from the Legion of Honour.

A teacher in private studios and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, his pupils included Alberto Giacometti and Henri Matisse. His Paris studio was converted into the Musée Bourdelle, preserving his house, workshop and garden, and his collection is held in major institutional collections in several countries, ensuring the ongoing presence of his work in the field of modern sculpture.
