About

António de Oliveira Salazar was an economist, university professor and a central figure in Portuguese politics in the 20th century, known for heading the Estado Novo government from 1932 to 1968. Trained in law and a full professor at Coimbra, he first became prominent as finance minister, a post in which he promoted the stabilization of public finances and a nationalist economic orientation.

As leader of the Estado Novo, Salazar established an authoritarian, corporatist regime inspired in part by the European context of the time and by Catholic social doctrine. During his tenure he introduced mechanisms of censorship, youth organizations and a political police force tasked with repressing opposition—changes that deeply affected the country’s political and civil life.

His economic policy favored protectionism and autarky, with lasting effects on productive structures and relations with the colonies. The Salazar era also included the prolonged Colonial War, which had significant human and political consequences for Portugal.

Salazar’s legacy remains controversial: praised by some for the initial financial stability he brought, and criticized by others for the repressive nature of the regime and for the consequences of his choices for civil rights and the country’s political development.
