About

Maria Anna Francisca Theresia Josepha Mechthildis of Austria was an archduchess of the House of Habsburg, born in 1804, daughter of Emperor Francis II (Francis I of Austria) and Maria Theresa of the Two Sicilies. Part of a generation defined by close dynastic ties among European royal houses, her position derived from the familial interconnections that shaped aristocratic politics of the period.

Maria Anna’s life was largely private and confined to palace circles. Because of intellectual and facial health issues, widely noted in contemporary sources, she did not take on public or court roles of significance, initially living at the Schönbrunn Palace. In 1835 she moved to Schloss Hetzendorf, where she remained until her death in 1858.

Buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, Maria Anna represents the less visible segment of the imperial family: members who, for various personal reasons, stayed outside the main political and dynastic events but who nevertheless reflect the structure and daily life of the Austrian court in the first half of the nineteenth century.
