About

Archduchess of Austria Margaretha belonged to the Tuscan branch of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine and was known for her role as a member of the European aristocracy in the interwar and postwar periods. The daughter of Archduke Leopold Salvator and Infanta Blanca, she received a multilingual education and was drawn to the arts and the theater, also taking part in relief efforts during the First World War. The fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire led to the loss of the family’s assets and forced her into exile in Barcelona, where she lived with her family for more than a decade.

In 1937 she married the Italian diplomat Francesco Maria Taliani de Marchio; the couple lived in Nanjing while he served as ambassador to China, a period that encompassed the Japanese occupation and, after Italy’s surrender in 1943, their internment in a detention camp until 1945. After the war they settled in Italy and, for a short time, in Spain, where Taliani served as ambassador.

Widowed in 1968, Margaretha divided her later years between Rome and a rural estate near Viareggio she had inherited from her family. When she died in 1986, she bequeathed that estate to the municipality of Viareggio for public and cultural use, leaving a legacy tied to heritage preservation and the memory of the former European aristocratic circle.
