About

Maria Immaculata Clementina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies was a princess of the Two Sicilies and, by marriage, an Archduchess of Austria and a princess of Tuscany, Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia. A granddaughter of reigning dynasties, she belonged to the European aristocracy of the nineteenth century during a period of political upheaval, such as the fall of the Neapolitan kingdom during the Expedition of the Thousand, which forced her family into exile in Rome.

Daughter of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, she received an upbringing shaped by modest, reserved habits inherited from her family environment. In 1861 she married Archduke Karl Salvator of Austria-Tuscany; the couple had ten children, preserving dynastic ties between royal and princely branches across Europe.

Known for her beauty, she appeared in Empress Elisabeth of Austria’s photographic album and entered the courtly memory of the time through anecdotal episodes, such as a jocular nickname linked to the gifts she received during pregnancy. She was also a Lady of the Order of the Star, reflecting her rank and connections to the imperial aristocracy’s orders of honor.
