About

Maria Christina Isabella Natalia of Austria was an Archduchess of the Teschen branch of the House of Habsburg‑Lorraine and, by birth, a princess of Bohemia, Hungary and Tuscany. Born in Kraków, she belonged to the late 19th‑century Austro‑Hungarian imperial nobility as the daughter of Archduke Friedrich, Duke of Teschen, and Princess Isabelle of Croÿ.

In 1902 she married in Vienna Emanuel Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Salm‑Salm, a union that made her the Hereditary Princess of that principality; after her father‑in‑law’s death she became known as the Hereditary Princess Dowager of Salm‑Salm. The marriage produced five children, among them Nicolaus Leopold, who succeeded as 8th Prince of Salm‑Salm, and descendants who maintained ties with other European noble houses.

Throughout her life, Maria Christina embodied the link between the central dynasties of the monarchy and the smaller German principalities, a role typical of the marital alliances of the period. She died in Anholt in 1962, leaving a family legacy within the genealogies of reigning houses and in the aristocratic history of Europe’s post‑imperial transition.
