About

Maria Josepha Gabriela Joanna Antonia Anne was an Archduchess of Austria, daughter of Emperors Francis I and Maria Theresa, and a member of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. Raised at the Viennese court, she received the comprehensive education typical for the imperial family — languages, history, theology and practical sciences — and lived at the Hofburg Palace in winter and at Schönbrunn and Laxenburg in summer.

She was notable for her closeness to her siblings, particularly her sister Maria Johanna and Archduke Joseph, and was regarded as one of the brightest young women at court after the death of Isabella of Parma. For diplomatic reasons she was prepared to become Queen consort of Naples, receiving specific instruction for that role from Countess Lerchenfeld.

Her early death from smallpox at sixteen interrupted this political plan: she died on 15 October 1767, the day she was to depart for her marriage to Ferdinand IV of Naples. Her death prompted immediate dynastic changes — the young Maria Carolina was then sent into the marriage arranged for Maria Josepha — and left a mark on the imperial family, with lasting memories among her siblings, including Marie Antoinette.
