About

Ferdinand Karl (Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Johann Maria), Archduke of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, was a member of the Austrian high nobility and a career military officer. The third son of Archduke Karl Ludwig and Maria Annunciata of the Two Sicilies, he served as a major general in the Austro-Hungarian army, belonging to the empire’s military aristocracy in the early 20th century.

In 1909 he entered into an unequal marriage with Bertha Czuber, a union contracted without the emperor’s knowledge and revealed only after they fled together. Two years later, at the insistence of Emperor Franz Joseph, he renounced his dynastic rights and titles and adopted the civilian name Ferdinand Burg. From that point he withdrew from Viennese court life and lived in Tyrol.

Afflicted by health problems, he developed tuberculosis, the disease that caused his death in 1915. Childless, his personal course and voluntary renunciation of privileges underscore internal tensions within the imperial family during a period of political and social change in pre–World War I Austria.
