About

An Austro-Hungarian archduke, career military officer and an early advocate for the use of aviation, Joseph Ferdinand Salvator Maria was best known as a commander during World War I and later as head of the imperial air service. Trained at the military academy in Wiener Neustadt, he held command positions in several regiments and went on to lead the XIV Corps and then the Austro-Hungarian 4th Army in the war’s opening years, until he was removed after the collapse during the Russian offensive of 1916.

Appointed Inspector General of the Imperial Air Force in 1917, he brought to the post his interest in ballooning and aeronautical innovations, though his tenure was viewed with reservation by the senior military leadership. After the war he withdrew from public life and lived as a private citizen in Austria.

During the Nazi occupation in 1938 he was arrested and briefly interned in Dachau, which damaged his health. He was married twice and had children in his second marriage; nevertheless he kept a low profile in his final decades. His life combined dynastic tradition with the shift to aerial warfare and the political upheavals of the first half of the twentieth century.
