Archie Gemmill

About

Archie Gemmill is a former Scottish footballer whose professional career was notable in English club football and with the Scotland national team. A midfielder known for his passing and attacking dynamism, he was an important figure in Derby County’s successful era under Brian Clough, helping the club to two league titles and making more than 300 appearances. He later moved to Nottingham Forest, where he won another First Division title, and had spells with Birmingham City, Jacksonville Tea Men and Wigan Athletic before finishing his playing career as player-manager at Derby.

He was capped 43 times for Scotland and captained the side on 22 occasions. His most famous moment came at the 1978 World Cup: the goal he scored against the Netherlands — a composed combination and burst of running — which remains remembered as one of the tournament’s great goals, despite Scotland’s elimination at that stage.

After retiring as a player, Gemmill returned to work with Clough as a coach at Nottingham Forest and took on managerial roles in British football, including a spell as manager of Rotherham United and responsibility for Scotland’s youth teams. His legacy combines club honors, international leadership and an iconic goal that endures in sporting culture.
