About
Ari Gold was an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter known for putting openly gay narratives into contemporary pop songs. First revealed as a child on youth recordings, he built a career as a vocalist and songwriter, taking part in studio projects, soundtracks and voice work before releasing his own material.
His debut album (2001), self-titled, drew attention for its polished production and candid lyrics about relationships between men, earning him the Outmusic Award for Best Debut Album. He later released Space Under Sun (2004) on his own label, GOLD18 Records, seeking independence in the face of record-label resistance to the subject matter of his songs.
Besides his solo work, Gold collaborated with dance producers and artists, had tracks remixed by names such as David Morales, and worked as a music supervisor on independent films. He was also active in LGBTQ+ and civil-rights organizations, joining campaigns and initiatives supporting homeless youth and people living with HIV.
He died in February 2021 of leukemia, leaving a legacy of increasing visibility for LGBTQ+ themes in contemporary pop and R&B.
