About

Armin Hary is a German sprinter whose career was defined by his dominance of the 100 metres in the late 1950s and by Olympic gold in 1960. Discovered in athletics after spells in football and the decathlon, he became known for exceptional starts out of the blocks, a technique that earned him records and controversy over false starts and hand-timed results.

In 1958 he won the European title in the 100 m and the 4×100 m relay; in 1960 he became the first man to be officially credited with 10.0 seconds for the 100 m on European soil and took the Olympic gold in Rome in 10.2 s, also winning the 4×100 m relay and equalling the world record.

He is associated both with technical pioneering and with the limits of hand timing at the time, which prompted debate over the validity of some results. After his athletic peak he stepped away from the sport; later he faced legal problems and subsequently devoted himself to social projects focused on children and on identifying young talent.
