About
Arturo Pomar Salamanca was a Spanish chess player recognized as a prodigy and a pioneer of chess in Spain. He became the first Spanish Grandmaster and won the national championship seven times, establishing himself as a central figure in the sport in the country for decades.
From childhood he attracted international attention: at ten he was already contesting regional finals and, at thirteen, drew a memorable game against the then world champion Alexander Alekhine. These early achievements prompted comparisons with historical prodigies and earned him wide coverage in the Spanish media.
In his adult career he produced notable results in zonal and international tournaments — including victories in Madrid (1960, tied for first), Torremolinos (1961) and Málaga (1964 and 1971) — and took part in the 1962 Interzonal in Stockholm, the high point of his run in the world championship cycle.
Beyond competitive play, Pomar helped promote chess as the author of several books and became an honored figure at events, receiving recognition from the international federation in 2016. He died in 2016, leaving a legacy as a pioneer and promoter of Spanish chess.
