About

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian statesman and poet who rose to prominence as a political leader in the post‑Independence period. A co‑founder and long‑time leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he had earlier been a central figure in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and served for many years in Parliament, elected ten times to the Lok Sabha and twice to the Rajya Sabha. He was the first non‑Congress prime minister to complete a full term, heading the government from 1998 to 2004, and he also served briefly as prime minister in 1996.

On foreign policy, his administration conducted the Pokhran‑II nuclear tests in 1998 and sought rapprochement with Pakistan, pursuing diplomatic initiatives such as the visit to Lahore and the post‑Kargil negotiations. Domestically, his government promoted economic and infrastructure reforms, encouraged private investment and partial privatisations, although it faced major crises, including the Kargil conflict, the 2001 attack on Parliament and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Vajpayee was also associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in his youth and is remembered for combining elements of cultural nationalism with political moderation, shaping a conservative current that sought to reconcile civilizational identity with democratic pluralism. His career left a lasting legacy, recognised by honours such as the Bharat Ratna and by the public memory of several infrastructure projects that bear his name.
