About

Auguste Giroux was a French rugby union player who rose to prominence at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Educated at Parisian lycées, he made his name as a centre three‑quarter—and occasionally as a wing—playing for Stade Français, with which he won six national titles. The press and his peers described him as a “class player” and a model for the position.

In sport, he was part of the French side that won the rugby tournament at the 1900 Paris Games, a result then recognized as an Olympic gold, and he appeared in several national championship finals throughout the 1890s and in 1901. His playing career secured him a notable place in the emerging French rugby scene.

Alongside his sporting life, Giroux pursued a medical career, defending a thesis on purpura and infectious diseases and practising medicine in Joinville‑le‑Pont, where he took part in social and welfare initiatives. He later ran a convalescent home for children that entertained various cultural and industrial figures.

His legacy combines contributions to sport and local public health: beyond his achievements on the field, he was active in social work aimed at protecting children and supporting veterans, reflecting the profile of an athlete‑professional engaged in cultural and welfare networks.
