About

B. R. Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer, regarded as one of the principal architects of the Constitution of India. A prolific scholar, he graduated in Economics and earned advanced degrees at Columbia University and the London School of Economics, building a reputation for research in law, economics and political science. Early in his career he worked as an economist, professor and lawyer; later he rose to prominence in politics, negotiating fundamental issues around independence and the consolidation of the Indian state.

His public work focused on combating discrimination against Dalits, women and laborers, promoting legal and policy reforms for social inclusion. He led campaigns, published newspapers and encouraged mobilizations that redefined civil rights in modern India. In 1956 he converted to Buddhism, sparking a conversion movement among Dalits.

Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1990, his legacy remains central to debates about social justice and equality in India, inspiring tributes and representations in public culture.
