About

Beatrice Cenci was a young Roman noblewoman whose life and execution in 1599 made her a symbol of popular resistance to aristocratic violence. The daughter of Count Francesco Cenci, she became the focus of a notorious case: accused of taking part in the murder of her father, who by many accounts abused his family, she was tried, convicted and beheaded together with other family members. The episode caused an outcry in Rome and drew the attention of Pope Clement VIII, who refused clemency amid fears of repeating recent familial crimes.

The trial and the public execution on the Ponte Sant'Angelo turned Beatrice into a legendary figure. Images of her death and accounts of the family’s suffering fueled narratives of social injustice, consolidating her memory as a popular martyr. Her tomb is in the church of San Pietro in Montorio.

Beatrice’s story inspired numerous works in art and literature—from Shelley’s romantic drama to short stories, novels, plays and operas across the 19th and 20th centuries—reflecting the enduring fascination with her figure and the conflict between power, domestic violence and justice.
