Ben Elton is a British comedian, screenwriter and novelist known for his central role in the 1980s "alternative comedy" movement and for the progressive political satire of his early stand-up work. He began as a BBC writer while still young and rose to prominence as co-writer of successful television series including The Young Ones and Blackadder, and for episodes of Mr. Bean, as well as sole author of comedies such as Filthy, Rich & Catflap, The Thin Blue Line and Upstart Crow.
Alongside his television work, Elton built a career in musical theatre — creating shows such as The Beautiful Game, We Will Rock You and Love Never Dies — and as a novelist, writing books that range across dystopia, humor and crime. He also distinguished himself as a stand-up performer, becoming one of the leading names on the British circuit and hosting programmes such as Friday Night Live.
His career includes long-standing collaborations (notably with Richard Curtis) and both critical and popular recognition, with award-winning series and wide influence on subsequent generations of British comedians. Elton’s legacy combines social critique in his comedy with prolific output across multiple artistic forms.
