About

Bernard Blier was a French actor who built a notable career as a character actor, with a filmography spanning roughly fifty years, from the 1930s to the 1980s. He appeared in nearly two hundred films, working with leading directors in both France and Italy, and developed a versatile screen persona ranging from comic to dramatic. He became especially associated with ordinary-man roles—often a cuckolded husband or a bitterly comic figure—but also played villains and prominent parts.

From the 1960s onward he established important creative partnerships, notably with screenwriter Michel Audiard and directors such as Georges Lautner and Henri Verneuil, which earned him some of his most memorable roles in popular classics (for example, Les Tontons flingueurs). He also acted in more than thirty Italian productions, making use of his bilingualism, and collaborated on several films directed by his son, Bertrand Blier, including Buffet froid (1979).

Acknowledged by critics and audiences alike, he received an honorary César in 1989. Despite health problems, he remained active until the end of his life and was honored in Italy with the Donatello for Best Supporting Actor. His legacy is that of a performer essential to twentieth-century French cinema, whose recurring presence in supporting roles shaped generations of viewers and filmmakers.
