About

Bernard John Manning was an English comedian and nightclub owner, known for an aggressive stage persona and jokes about race, sex and religion that won him wide popularity in the 1960s and 1970s and provoked controversy in later decades. As owner of the Embassy Club, he converted an old hall into a crowd draw and helped establish the northern English club scene, claiming that several notable acts appeared there early in their careers.

On television he was prominent on shows such as The Comedians and The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, but lost prominence as public sensibilities changed; despite this he maintained a steady career on the club circuit and in live performance until the end of his life. His biography also records military service, work as a singer and as a compère with big bands, and family management of the club in later years.

Manning’s public life was marked by legal incidents and controversies over racist language, and by statements in which he described himself as racist, which affected his public image. At the same time, friends and neighbours offered personal defenses, and Manning repeatedly said that his stage character did not fully reflect his private life. His legacy is mixed: acknowledged for his success with clubs and popular appeal, he remains a subject of debate about the limits of public humour.
