Bernard Pivot was a French journalist and cultural presenter, best known for popularizing literature on television. As creator and host of landmark programs such as Apostrophes (1975–1990) and Bouillon de culture, Pivot turned literary interviews into a widely accessible format, influencing generations of readers and media professionals. He also served as president of the Académie Goncourt from 2014 to 2020.
Over decades of work he was active in the print press — including Le Figaro Littéraire — and on radio, and he took part in founding the magazine Lire. He promoted initiatives related to correct language use, such as spelling tournaments that evolved into the Dicos d’or, aimed at valuing orthography and vocabulary.
His public career included famous guests and heated cultural debates, as well as controversies concerning certain guests and comments on sensitive topics, incidents that led to reassessments of editorial choices. Pivot left a lasting legacy in spreading literary culture in France and in shaping how cultural interviews are conducted on television.
