Bernie Tiede (Bernhardt Tiede II) is an American funeral director whose notoriety stems from the murder of Marjorie “Marge” Nugent, a wealthy widow, in November 1996 in Carthage, Texas. He worked as an assistant funeral director and later as Nugent’s manager and companion; his intimate relationship with Nugent and the subsequent alteration of her will to benefit him were central to the case.
Originally convicted of first-degree murder, Tiede was initially sentenced to 50 years in prison; after appeals and retrials, he received a life sentence. The case drew national and international attention following the release of the film Bernie (2011), which prompted renewed investigations and the presentation of new evidence in his defense, including allegations of abuse and psychological dissociation.
Legal issues raised included the validity of confessions, the impact of newly discovered evidence on sentencing, and public debate about his personality and community role — in Carthage he was seen as a popular figure involved in civic activities.
