About

Betty Thomas is an American filmmaker and actress whose career is notable for work in television comedy and mainstream cinema. She began as a member of the improvisational troupe The Second City and established herself as an actress by playing police officer Lucy Bates on Hill Street Blues, a role that earned seven Emmy nominations and one win in the 1984–85 season. That recognition paved the way for her transition into television directing, including episodes of Hooperman, Doogie Howser, M.D., and Dream On—the latter earning her another Emmy as a director.

In film, Thomas has directed commercially successful mainstream titles such as The Brady Bunch Movie, Private Parts, Dr. Dolittle, and 28 Days. In 2009, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel became, at the time, the highest-grossing film directed solo by a woman, reinforcing her commercial prominence in the industry.

Beyond her artistic work, she founded the production company Tall Trees and has received awards recognizing her contributions to film directing, including the Dorothy Arzner Directors Award and, more recently, the Robert B. Aldrich Award from the Directors Guild of America. Her career marks the growing presence of women in creative and leadership roles within mainstream cinema.
