About

Bill Sharman was a central figure in American basketball, notable as a player, coach and executive. As a player he was a standout for the Boston Celtics in the 1950s, forming with Bob Cousy one of the era’s most influential backcourts; he won four NBA championships, led the league in free‑throw percentage for seven seasons and was named MVP of the All‑Star Game in 1955. In recognition of his playing career he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976 and had his number 21 retired by the Celtics.

Transitioning to coaching and management, Sharman found immediate success: he won the ABA title with the Utah Stars (1970–71) and later led the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA championship, overseeing a record 33‑game winning streak and being named Coach of the Year. He is one of the few individuals honored in the Hall of Fame both as a player and as a coach (inducted in 1976 and 2004).

As a Lakers executive he helped assemble championship teams in the 1980s, contributing directly to five titles for the franchise during that decade. Author of books on shooting and methodology, his legacy spans on‑court achievements, technical innovations and a long career at the highest levels of the sport.
