Billy Mitchell (William Lendrum Mitchell) was a United States Army general and a central figure in the history of American military aviation, often called the “father of the United States Air Force.” Distinguished service in World War I led him to command American air units in France, where he planned and led large-scale joint operations such as the Saint-Mihiel offensive, earning a reputation as a tactical leader and organizer.
After the war, Mitchell became a vigorous advocate for developing aviation as a strategic weapon, pushing for greater investment in bombers, engines and aerial armaments. He promoted tests and demonstrations to prove the effectiveness of bombing against warships, a stance that created sharp friction with senior Army and Navy leadership.
His public campaign and outspoken criticisms of military leaders culminated in a 1925 court-martial for insubordination, loss of rank and resignation. Despite the controversy during his lifetime, his technical and institutional legacy was later acknowledged: he received posthumous honors and exerted decisive influence on the creation and strengthening of American air forces, and his name is associated with an important American military aircraft model, the B-25 Mitchell.
