About

Bob Graham was an American politician and attorney who became a central figure in Florida politics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. A member of the Democratic Party, he served two terms as governor of Florida (1979–1987) and then three terms as a United States senator (1987–2005). His public career spanned 38 consecutive years, with an emphasis on education, economic diversification and environmental protection.

As governor, Graham promoted the expansion of the state higher education system and launched a broad land-preservation program, creating the “Save the Everglades” initiative, which would grow into a nationally significant restoration effort. His administration also coincided with job growth and a rise in Florida’s per capita income above the national average.

In the Senate, he chaired the Intelligence Committee during a critical period after the September 11 attacks, leading joint investigations and taking a stance against the Iraq War. He also served on national commissions addressing environmental disasters and the financial crisis, and founded the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at his university.

Known for his popularity and a practical, service-oriented approach—illustrated by his practice of undertaking “workdays” in local occupations—Graham left a legacy in environmental, education and national security policy.
